Type Locality and Naming

The name of Sanyajiang Formation was given by the Maoming Geological Company of Guangdong in 1973. The type locality is the Sanyajiang area of Huazhou. The type section is the Luoyeling section of Maoming (110º45', 21º41').


Lithology and Thickness

The Sanyajiang Formation is divided into 4 members in ascending order. Member 1 is composed of reddish clastic rocks. Member 2 is reddish clastic and volcanic rocks. Member 3 is dacite porphyry, andesite porphyry. Member 4 is felsophyre and rhyolite porphyry. The thickness of the formation ranges from 129 m to 2720 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Sanyajiang Formation is unconformably overlying Tongguling Fm.

Upper contact

The Sanyajiang Formation is unconformably underlying the Luoding Fm.

Regional extent

It is distributed in the Luoding, Maoming and Leizhou areas, Guangdong.
